Weekend at Wynns

We had a wonderful 'Weekend at Wynns' this year, it was great to see so many new faces as well as the return of familiar friends.

The weekend began on the evening of Friday 16th June with a welcome dinner at Chardonnay Lodge with back vintage Black Label Cabernet dating back to 1990 and our new 2003 Johnson's Block Shiraz Cabernet to accompany our meals.

Saturday kicked off with a gourmet lunch at Wynns, followed by a master class tasting featuring 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2003 Michael Shiraz and 1982, 1984, 1996 and 2003 John Riddoch Cabernet, hosted by our Senior Winemaker, Sue Hodder.

After an afternoon break and time to freshen up, it was back on the bus to Wynns Cellar Door for a more formal evening starting with hors d'oeuvres and a pre-release tasting of our 2006 Riesling.

Dinner involved 3 courses of beautifully catered food with matching wines such as: 1991, 1993 and 1997 Michael Shiraz with Lamb Backstrap for entrée; 1986, 1997 and 2003 John Riddoch Cabernet with Hopkins River Beef for main course; and 1958 Cabernet, 2001 Harold Cabernet and a 'Mystery Wine' with the cheese platters and chocolates

A magnum of Black Label Cabernet was awarded to the one who guessed the 'Mystery Wine' (none other than our Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, the 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon) based on Sue's quiz and her questions on the winemaker, variety and vintage of the wine.

We hope that everyone enjoyed the weekend as much as we did and look forward to seeing you all at the next John Riddoch Club event.

Cellar Door Events

Coonawarra After Dark

Once again Coonawarra Cellar Doors opened for the fourth 'Coonawarra After Dark' event on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th April. Visitors came and were able to experience the region and more importantly, the floodlit wineries at the peak of Vintage. The Cellar Doors of the region offered a range of activities from winery tours, opportunities to meeting the Winemakers and chances to sample and enjoy wonderful local produce and the regions' finest wines.

At Wynns we opened our doors over the two nights offering over 300 visitors the chance to sample the grapes and juice of different wine varieties and the opportunity to try all of our current release wines and some special back vintages, accompanied by wine tasters platters.

Penola Coonawarra Festival

The Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival was held over the weekend of the 19th and 21st May. The region came alive with exhibitions of fine art, performing art and literature, attracting regional, state and national artists and performers. While the focus for the weekend was the arts, Coonawarra wine and local cuisine was also featured. Wynns once again invited the Melbourne based acapella group Eclectica to perform in Cellar Door over the festival weekend capping off a very successful celebration that has built up a reputation as one of the highlights of the year.

Cellar Dwellers

Currently running for the month of July, Cellar Doors across Coonawarra are providing visitors a rare opportunity to taste and buy sometimes hard to find back vintage wines. Wynns is offering a tasting of the 1990, 1995 & 1996 Cabernets from the cellars accompanied by a taster's plate at a cost of $10 per tasting. Money is redeemable on any purchase of back vintage wines.

Coonawarra Roadshow

The Coonawarra vignerons will once again be hitting the road to bring the widely renowned wines of Coonawarra to a capital city near you, with exclusive tasting event featuring 21 famous Coonawarra brands and over 100 of the latest release wines from the region. Why not come and meet the people behind these great wines; the Roadshow will visit: Brisbane on Tuesday 22nd August, Melbourne on Thursday 24th August, Adelaide on Monday 4th September and Perth on Wednesday 6th September. Coonawarra Cabernet Celebration: October 20th - 22nd

This year the Coonawarra Vignerons Association will celebrate the 10th annual Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations and Barrel Series Auction over the weekend of Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd October. With a great line up of events such as live music, master class tastings, dinners and vineyard tours, the weekend will culminate on Sunday with the traditional Jazz and Sparkling brunch followed by the famous Barrel Series Auction.

Wynns will host two events on Saturday 21st October. We will welcome back Lucifers Lounge, one of Adelaide's best cabaret lounge bands, to perform at the winery throughout the afternoon while Gilly's of Hamilton serve their sensational curries - all while you relax and enjoy our premium wines. On Saturday Evening Wynns will host a dinner in the historic barrel cellar.
