Vineyard Management Team
Given the heritage, size and complexity of the Wynns vineyards in cool climate Coonawarra, a team approach has been adopted to ensure optimal fruit quality and supply.
The Wynns Coonawarra Estate team is committed to promoting the long term sustainability of these vineyards, and also achieving the very satisfying rewards of working with the winemakers to manage the vagaries of the season, soil types, and varieties, to produce exceptional fruit that contributes to fine wines.
Allen Jenkins
Regional Vineyard Manager, Wynns Coonawarra Estate
Allen Jenkins has a passion for viticulture; exactly what he needs as Regional Vineyard Manager of two thousand hectares of vineyard at Robe and Coonawarra for Wynns Coonawarra Estate and Jamieson’s Run.
Allen’s obsession with viticulture began twenty years ago, when he combined qualifications in agriculture and education to teach viticultural components of the winemaking and marketing courses at Roseworthy College, Australia’s then pre-eminent wine education facility. Subsequently as a TAFE Viticulture Lecturer, Allen participated in writing and presenting the first trade level viticultural courses offered in South Australia.
Prior to moving to Coonawarra in 2001 Allen consolidated his vineyard management skills for seven years in Southcorp’s Adelaide Hills and Eden Valley vineyards.
Imbued with a strong sense of heritage, Allen is excited by the ongoing challenges involved in reinvigorating the large areas of old vines in Coonawarra. "These vineyards, some first planted in the late 1800’s, with their ancient terra rossa soils are unique, and are a resource that we are committed to redeveloping and renovating."
Attention to viticultural detail, timeliness and careful long term planning are being employed by the Coonawarra vineyard management team to reconstruct and re-trellis old vines; redevelop blocks to appropriate varieties; and most importantly target regulated crop loads and high quality fruit. "The resultant wine quality from the renovation work commenced over the last five years has been particularly encouraging."
Allen is motivated by promoting the long term sustainability of these vineyards, and also achieving the very satisfying rewards of working with an exciting team of viticulturists and winemakers to manage the vagaries of the season, soil types, and varieties, to produce exceptional fruit that contributes to fine wines.
