Overview

Overview

The Cabernet vineyards from V&A Lane have long been looked to for their depth and character as important contributors to Wynns top wines. The inspiration for the V&A Lane Cabernet Shiraz comes from the Wynns ‘claret story’ that goes back to the 1950s, where wines were made to a style rather than being about exact proportions. For this modern version, the grapes are harvested on the same day and then co-fermented.

The purpose of V&A Lane wines is to showcase a contrasting wine style from our two most beloved grape varieties. A purposely early harvest to highlight a fresh red fruit spectrum, naturally lower alcohol, wild ferments, and the use of larger oak for maturation are just some of the techniques employed to make these beautiful food friendly wines.

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

There are red apple blossoms, mulberry, raspberry and white pepper notes. A pleasant dusty spice and a hint of bay leaf gives an overall harmony and restraint to the aromas..

Flavours and Palate

Co-fermentation of the two varieties creates a layered and harmonious style, with unique tannin structure. There is a weightless feel to the palate without compromise to intensity. A mix of forest berries, black tea and aniseed plays on the palate. The texture is lightly powdery and persistent, with the gentle tannins adding length. All this meshes beautifully with perfectly balanced acidity ensuring a seamless fresh note in the wine right to the end.

Ray Jordan

"I’m always buoyed when I see this classically Australian combination used in the best red wines. Interestingly in this year, both the Shiraz and Cabernet were co-fermented. The fruit is picked early with the intention of creating a lively fresh red wine style that uses wild fermentation and larger format oak, to allow the brilliant fruit to reveal itself. Sweet fruit of Shiraz is boosted by the structural contribution of the linear Cabernet. Love it. 96 Points."

Jeni Port

"A rainy day in Coonawarra with the concentrated scent of the Australian bush heavy in the air. That’s the aroma that greets the drinker – the earth, the soil, the bush, dried herbs and black and red fruits – simply sensational. The great Australian red blend is in familiar territory. Liquorice, chocolate, spice and dried herbs swirl around black and red fruits flowing easily to a long finish. Smoky cedary oak remains a well-integrated constant. This is a wine that that never raises its voice, never moves out of step and is defined by  silky but firm tannins and generous flavour. Cellaring will probably be the last thing on your mind when it is tasted, but it’s a worthy option. 95 Points"

Huon Hooke

"Deep purple-red colour, vibrant and youthful. Spicy blackberry aromas, cassis and lots of detail, the palate is full bodied and firmly constructed with ample fine tannins which are balanced and contribute to the wine's outstanding structure and persistence. An impressive cabernet blend with long term ageing potential, but which already drinks well. 95 Points."

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Overall, the 2022 Coonawarra vintage was a high-quality year without any obvious climate change impacts. After a cold start to the season, Budburst occurred in a cool spring. Thankfully, flowering week was ideal – warm temperatures with no wind – resulting in an even berry set. The ideal flowering conditions and above average temperatures led to even red coloring with minimal variability between bunches.
Harvest dates ranged from late April into May. This is in line with long term average dates for Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Vintage 2022 exemplifies the Wynns Coonawarra Estate medium bodied age worthy style.
