Overview

Overview

Savour the heritage of Wynns with our Black Label Messenger Chardonnay, a tribute to the pioneering spirit of the Coonawarra region and its rich wine heritage. Nestled in the cooler southern reaches of Coonawarra on Ravenswood Lane, the Messenger vineyard has long been our favourite Chardonnay patch. We've picked the most pristine and flavoursome parcels to create a Chardonnay with purity, richness and texture, framed by fine French oak barrels and tempered by an easy approachability.
Named after the iconic Messenger family and cultivated in their namesake southern vineyard, this Chardonnay is a tribute to the viticultural heritage of the Coonawarra. Flavours of nectarine, poached pear, and cashew blend with hints of spicy oak to create a beautifully balanced and textured profile. One that reflects the unique varietal character of the vineyard’s cool and prolonged ripening season.

Taste Description

Nose

White peach, fresh pear, hazelnut flesh and nutmeg lead an invitingly perfumed aroma underpinned by well balanced, classy, nutty oak.

Sumptuously flavoured and textural, with clean white peaches and fresh pears, its clarity and intensity reflect a remarkable season for Coonawarra Chardonnay, with a complex extension of seamlessly knit, spicy, nutty oak finished off harmoniously by a refreshing citric acidity.

Jeni Port

A glistening green gold hue offers an impressive start. Lifted aromatics keep the momentum going with aromas of nectarine, white peach and citrus with the lasting scent of apple blossom. The ’24 Coonawarra vintage was cool and dry and Chardonnay responded with a supple, elegant wine that lays everything out up front and is generous across the middle palate before being nicely corralled by lively acidity into a bright finish. An effortless chalky texture combines with well-composed oak – eight months in French oak, 27% new – and ripe stone fruits, citrus, grilled nuts and buttery lemon curd. Brings a sunny outlook to the future of Chardonnay in Coonawarra. 93 Points.

Ray Jordan

This is the first release of this wine from a vineyard in the southern part of Coonawarra’s Terra Rossa. It is an impressive first-up release showing the benefit of the mild to warm, dry harvest period and lower yields, creating ideal conditions for Coonawarra Chardonnay. The quality of the fruit after handpicking has allowed whole bunch pressing, barrel ageing, and malolactic fermentation all of which result in a light-bodied but textured creamy wine with a fine distinct acid line and real palate brightness and energy. Yes, Coonawarra can make excellent whites. 93 Points.

Pale colour. Fresh lemon glacé, white peach, tonic water aromas with hints of roasted almond/ marzipan. Creamy and refreshing on the palate with ample lemon curd, stone fruit, tonic water flavours, fine loose knit chalky textures, attractive mid-palate creaminess and underlying vanilla/ marzipan notes. Finishes crisp and minerally. 8 months maturation in 27% new and 73% seasoned French oak barrels. Drink now – 2030. Alc. 13.2%. 93 points

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The 2024 Vintage in Coonawarra is unlike any other in the modern era. The growing season was set up by an El Niño influence with a warmer and drier preceding winter. This resulted in early budburst and start to the season. Then, unexpectedly, Coonawarra had cooler and wetter weather in late Spring and early Summer resulting in good shoot growth and healthy canopies.

Vintage 2024 points to an exceptionally good vintage with lovely firm acidity in the whites and a strong red wine vintage. Very intense colours, bold tannins and depth of varietal fruit flavours are early indicators of a vintage of the highest quality, translating into wines that have excellent cellaring potential.
