Overview

Overview

Shiraz (formerly known as “Hermitage”) is an important part of Coonawarra’ s history. The acknowledged reputation of Coonawarra for age worthy wines has largely centred on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Shiraz blends. However, the very early history (in the 1890s) focused on other varieties – particularly Shiraz. Today Wynns is privileged to grow Shiraz on many prime locations within Coonawarra. These vineyards have stories to tell and a history of quality. We select the Black Label Shiraz from the oldest of them including the Undoolya vineyard, a rare fragment of the original 1890s fruit colony planting, which was planted in between 1894 and 1987. Wynns ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz is a superb example of Coonawarra’s cool climate style.

"Deep crimson. Lovely pure blackberry pastille, cassis, hint dark chocolate, pepper aromas. Generous and inky with ample blackberry, mulberry fruits, fine loose-knit velvety textures and underlying vanilla, marzipan notes. Finishes chocolaty and minerally. A brilliant Coonawarra Shiraz with superb fruit definition, density, buoyancy and length. Based on heirloom vineyards – Undoolya (1894) and Johnson’s Block (1925). A wonderful vintage with the structure for long term aging. 13.8% alc Drink now – 2035+ 97 points"

"It was Shiraz which originally made the reputation of this famous region, even if today, Coonawarra is known for its Cabernet. There are some seriously old vineyards in the region providing superb fruit for wines like this. Fruit from the ancient Undoolya vineyard is included – it was part of the original fruit colony plantings from between 1894 and 1897. The Johnson’s Block, planted in 1925, also contributes. The average age of the vines used for this terrific Shiraz is 75 years. Deep opaque purple, we have aromas of black cherries, cloves, spices, bay leaves, warm earth, dry herbs, mulberries and blackberries, all leading to a generous and approachable palate, full of flavour, especially lots of chocolatey notes. Excellent length here, over which the wine maintains its intensity. A very fine Coonawarra Shiraz and a release which should sit among the best of this line. Drink over the next 10 to 12 years."
