Overview

Overview

Shiraz, formerly known as “Hermitage”, has long been an important part of Coonawarra’s history. While the region’s acknowledged reputation for age-worthy wines has largely centred on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Shiraz blends, its earliest plantings in the 1890s focused on other varieties, in particular Shiraz. Today, Wynns is privileged to grow Shiraz across many prime sites within Coonawarra. These vineyards hold both history and a proven record of quality.

The Old Vines Shiraz is selected from the oldest of these sites, including the Undoolya vineyard – a rare fragment of the original 1890s fruit colony plantings, established between 1894 and 1897. Medium-bodied with a fine, silky palate, Wynns ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz is a superb example of Coonawarra’s cool-climate style.

Flavours and Palate

The vine age in this wine - the oldest dating back to 1894 - brings an effortless ease and a quiet dignity. A beautiful expression of cool-climate Shiraz in an excellent year, the palate is bright and fresh, with fine, chalky tannins bringing structure and subtle poise. Notes of magnolia and dark cherry add complexity, creating a wine with depth and great aging ability.

Ray Jordan | Wine Pilot | May 2026

"A super season in Coonawarra has produced an outstanding example of this style. This is generous and intense, but delivers with that real Coonawarra elegance and poise that captures so much of the region and, in this case, a very good season. Supremely balanced and poised, with potential to cellar in the medium term. But this is such great drinking now." 95 Points.

Steve Lesaczynski | Q Wine Reviews | May 2026

"A Coonawarra classic that nails the brief. Spot the Wynns Coonawarra Black Label out and about, and you can be assured to be in safe hands." 95 Points.
