Overview

Overview

First made in 1982, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon was conceived as a flagship wine for Wynns. John Riddoch himself was a true visionary. Amongst his many acheivements are the building of the Wynns Gabled winery and the establishment of established the Coonawarra Fruit Colony

John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is made in small quantities from the best available fruit grown on the estate's extensive Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in the heart of the terra rossa soil It has become a definitive Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, made only in years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available, using less than one percent of the top quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Taste Description

Taste Description

Nose

Dark, concentrated aromatics of black olive, mulberry and baked meats are elegantly fused with bay leaf and fennel seed, creating anopulent and complex wine.

Flavours and Palate

Supple and polished, this wine first displays concentrated black olive and mulberry, which lead to elegant tobacco, cassis and hints of rosemary. Powerful and restrained, the melding of concentrated dark fruit, subtle savoury notes and definitive, firm, bright chalky tannins, create a timeless wine with phenomenal purity and savory spice finish.

James Halliday

"A potent, rich, complex, full-bodied cabernet that has a signature as indelible as that of Grange. Cassis/blackcurrant fruit, with touches of earth, tar and licorice, pours in a rush along the palate, not held up by oak or tannins, both subsumed into the fabric of the wine."

Huon Hooke

"Very deep, concentrated purple/red, amazing for a three year-old. Oak adds a toasty, nutty patina to the blackberry and spice fruit. The palate is intense and deep, lush and layered, but not big or tannic, or oaky. A very stylish but also very powerful wine, with a very long carry. It will age superbly in the long-term."

A low yielding and early long ripening season provided optimal flavour development.
