Overview

Overview

Sourced from the McKillop Vineyard in the northern part of Coonawarra, the 2024 vintage marks the first release of a straight-varietal Wynns Cabernet Franc.

The season was momentous for Coonawarra Cabernet Franc, with a mild to warm, dry picking period and lower yields producing a wine of exceptional brightness, balanced fruit, and intense varietal expression.

A shorter maceration period, coupled with maturation in neutral 3000L French oak vats, has allowed the distinct character of Cabernet Franc to shine through, offering stellar vibrancy. This wine is perfectly suited for immediate enjoyment or short to medium-term cellaring.

Ray Jordan

This wine is sourced from the McKillop vineyard in the northern part of Coonawarra, giving it an angelic purity from the start. The colour is brilliant and bright with a vibrant luminosity. Aromas are an exotic merging of violets and raspberry with a subtle confectionary jubey lift. In the palate, which has been crafted using only very large format seasoned French oak vats, the vibrant, juicy red fruits announce themselves. It’s medium-bodied with succulent and delicious flavours opening up. Fine chalky tannins have the Coonawarra DNA. A super wine. Drink now - 2035+. 97 Points.

Andrew Caillard MW

Medium deep crimson. Lifted peppery, graphite aromas with underlying blackcurrant brambly notes. Inky deep and minerally textured with attractive blackcurrant, graphite, hint cedar flavours, finely grained and persistent tannins and well-integrated roasted walnut oak. Chalky/ graphite notes at the finish. Impressively balanced and refined cabernet franc with excellent purity and definition. Best to drink early to medium term, Drink now – 2030. 12.9% alc 95 Points.

Shanteh Wale

A potent mix of bilberries, staining mulberries and dark cherries in syrup. There is freshly turned potting soil, caper leaf and handfuls of clove. The intensity of this wine lies in its fruit power, un-muddied by oak spice. Acidity chimes long and lengthy with silky tannins. This is a celebration of cabernet franc, captured in the prime of its life. It dances in its merriment. Drink now or cellar for a further eight to 10 years. Drink: 2034+. 95 Points.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The 2024 Vintage in Coonawarra is unlike any other in the modern era. The growing season was set up by an El Niño influence with a warmer and drier preceding winter. This resulted in early budburst and start to the season. Then, unexpectedly, Coonawarra had cooler and wetter weather in late Spring and early Summer resulting in good shoot growth and healthy canopies.

Vintage 2024 points to an exceptionally good vintage with lovely firm acidity in the whites and a strong red wine vintage. Very intense colours, bold tannins and depth of varietal fruit flavours are early indicators of a vintage of the highest quality, translating into wines that have excellent cellaring potential.
