For many years this was not released as a separate wine but thankfully a few years back the decision was made to release it more regularly when the planets aligned and the vintage was good. So, you know it’s from a good vintage. This is one of the most stylish and expressive of all the Michael’s I have tasted. The bright red fruits of Shiraz with a subtle plum and slightly leafy red berry lift. The palate is so tightly integrated but there is warm medium-bodied flesh wrapping around it. The fine chalky tannins on the finish complete a fabulous wine. 98 Points.

Deep crimson. Beautiful black cherry, peppercorn, sage aromas with vanilla, roasted chestnut notes. Inky deep wine with black cherry, mulberry, blackberry fruits, fine persistent chocolaty tannins and beautifully integrated new oak. Finishes claret firm with peppery/ chinotto spice notes. A lovely characterful Coonawarra Shiraz with impressive definition, richness and flow. Delicious drinking already. 12 months maturation in French oak barriques and hogsheads. 25% new French oak, 44% two-year-old and 31% three-year-old barrels. Drink now – 2038. Alc. 13.1%. 96 points

Wynns Michael is based on what was originally a one-off wine, and a very famous one at that, the 1955 Michael, which was named after the founder’s son. It was revived as a regular in the portfolio many years later and today represents the very best Shiraz that Wynns has to offer. It is often forgotten that Coonawarra originally made its reputation on great Shiraz, rather than Cabernet Sauvignon. An inky dark maroon colour, this is a wine of depth and concentration. Quite formal in structure with serious intensity, there is a slight sawdust-like note of oak, but this is well in the process of integration and the wine should be immaculate in a year or two. There are notes of plums, chocolate, roast meats, cranberries, beef stock, black fruits, bay leaves, cloves and soy. A seductive texture, ideal balance, firm but fine tannins and amazing length, this will surely be better in five to six years (and merit an even higher score), before drinking superbly for the following twelve to fifteen years. A really good Michael. 95 points

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Overall, the 2022 Coonawarra vintage was a high-quality year without any obvious climate change impacts.

After a cold start to the season, Budburst occurred in a cool spring. Thankfully, flowering week was ideal – warm temperatures with no wind – resulting in an even berry set. The ideal flowering conditions and above average temperatures (with no heat waves) led to even veraison (red berries colouring) with minimal variability between bunches. Harvest dates ranged from late April into May. This is in line with long term average dates for Wynns Coonawarra Estate.

Vintage 2022 exemplifies the Wynns Coonawarra Estate medium bodied age worthy style.
